WORLD AIDS DAY: Getting to Zero

As the country commemorates World AIDS Day with the rest of the world on December 1, Health Secretary Enrique T. Ona  sounded the alarm as the country continues to record an average of six new HIV infections everyday in 2011 when it was only one new case every 2 days a decade ago. The increase was largely due to spread among males who have unprotected sex with males and among injecting drug users who share contaminated needles.
 
“The HIV situation, while alarming, is concentrated among key populations at higher risk and not the public at large. This provides us with greeter opportunity to halt and reverse the trend in the next few years. One which will require a more focused, muliti-sectoral approach and efficient implementation of prevention and control programs," Secretary Ona said. This also means rational resource allocation even as Global Fund canceled Round 11 investments world-wide
